Silicon Valley encompasses more than 20 miles of diverse offerings, including parks, museums, cultural gems, mountain vistas, and, naturally, cutting-edge technology. There’s an abundance of activities and sights to explore, ranging from scenic wonders to historical and scientific marvels. Here are the essential things to do and places to go that dot the landscape of Northern California’s Silicon Valley.

Given that Silicon Valley primarily comprises suburban areas, having a car is essential. Although there are various public transit options available in the Valley, their practicality as a primary mode of transportation largely hinges on your specific location and workplace. If you are conveniently located within walking distance of both a bus stop and a train station, then relying on public transit can be a feasible option (though having a car for errands and weekend outings is still advisable).

Modes of Transportation in Silicon Valley:

  • Bay Area Caltrain
  • VTA Light Rail
  • SamTrans
  • Amtrak
  • BART
  • Local Shuttles and Private Buses

Money & Tipping

The USA has a different tipping culture to Europe and most countries around the world – it’s discretionary, but very much expected. For service workers —restaurant and hotel staff, taxi drivers, tour guides, etc. —tips are an essential part of their earnings. Always aim to tip between 18 and 20%, or even more if the service was excellent. For purchases over the counter, like takeaway coffees, tipping isn’t necessary but will be warmly appreciated.

Haggling is uncommon. If you try to negotiate a lower price in a restaurant or shop, it’s likely you’ll be met wit a bemused look and possibly be considered rude. Be aware that sales tax is usually not included in shop prices, so the price you pay is often higher than advertised.

Situated in the southern region of the San Francisco Bay Area in California, Silicon Valley is renowned for its temperate climate and abundant sunshine, featuring consistently moderate temperatures year-round. Winters in the area are cool and moist, while summers are warm and dry, with typical temperatures spanning from the mid-50s to the mid-80s Fahrenheit. Nevertheless, temperature fluctuations may occur based on the time of day, geographical location, and seasonal changes within the region.

Phones & Electricals

An electric plug in America has two pins. Search for a Type A plug adaptor. You will be able to purchase one in most electronics stores or large stores like Target and Walmart.
Mobile data reception is excellent and SIM cards are available in most grocery stores and electronics stores. Free WiFi will also be included in your serviced accommodation.

Safety & Security

Silicon Valley boasts some of the safest cities in the United States, making it an ideal location to raise children due to its outstanding schools and low crime rates. It is primarily a suburban expanse where city boundaries blur as you navigate through it. Nevertheless, there are urban enclaves like downtown San Jose and downtown Palo Alto, and for those seeking a more secluded lifestyle, rural communities are also available.

Supermarkets: There are plenty of familiar favorites like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods with sizable stores across the city. Note that most stores offer home delivery services —just ask or take a look online.

Local stores: You won’t have to go far from your furnished apartment in Silicon Valley to come across a decently sized, family-owned grocery store. The selection of food is generally very good, the service far more personalised, and prices competitive.

Speciality: The Bay Area is one of the world’s greatest food destinations. Delis, bakeries, butchers and markets are in high supply and worth exploring if you love good eats.
